How do I keep those makeup brushes spick and span? It's dead easy. Honest.
Admittedly, I used to be really naughty and would never clean my brushes. For years, they'd just harbour layers and layers of makeup for months at a time, until they eventually fell apart, and I'd throw them away and buy cheap replacements. Nowadays, I'm a little more hygiene-conscious when it comes to my makeup tools, thankfully! I started cleaning them after I developed acne, convinced that mucky brushes really wouldn't help. Okay, so my skin hasn't massively improved, but who wants to put their makeup on with cakey brushes anyway?
I probably tend to clean my brushes a little too often now, usually doing it every other day and sometimes daily, but I'd rather do that then leave them for ages on end. I know cleaning almost daily is a bit extreme, but it's not like my brushes are falling apart because of it; they're all still in great condition.
How to clean your makeup brushes
It's really easy:
- Get your hands on some baby shampoo.
- Lather your brushes up in it.
- Rinse them thoroughly.
- Let them dry naturally.
It's really that easy! I normally do it before I go to bed, so that they can dry overnight and be ready for use the following morning. It's better to do all of them at once because it's just easier than staggering it out.
The other way I clean my brushes
If I'm pushed for time, I also have the fantastic B Brush Cleanser from Superdrug. It's basically like a hand sanitiser, but for your makeup brushes. It's antibacterial, so you're safe in the knowledge that it's killing all those germs on your brushes.
All you need to do with this is spray it onto the bristles (watch your hands though, as it can sting a bit if you've got sensitive skin) before rubbing your brush into a muslin cloth or tissue. Repeat this until you've got all the makeup off, and you're done! The advantage of doing it this way is that your brushes dry way quicker. So, I tend to use this if I've forgotten to clean my brushes at night, or if I've got a really early start, and I know they won't have time to dry the other way.
