Christmas crept up on me a lot this year. I was quite busy with Uni through the first half of December, so it really came out of nowhere! Despite being grossly underprepared (For instance, still wrapping presents in the early hours of the morning on Christmas day!) it was pretty enjoyable. So, here are some pictures of this Christmas:
Joe's Kitchen is a brand new restaurant that's opening in the Intu Centre, Derby. You might have seen on Instagram that they very kindly invited me to sample the food and drink at their preview event on Thursday.
Firstly, they offered us a range of gorgeous cocktails and mocktails, all with fresh ingredients. I had a mango & ginger mocktail, which was lovely! Then they gave us a chance to explore our surroundings a bit. I love the design of the restaurant, and the attention to detail! A lot of the tables have little blackboards on them that have funny quotes on:
Saturday afternoons are for guzzling coffee.
Bean Caffe in Derby have branched out and opened a second cafe at Riverside Chambers in the city centre. I've only been to the original Bean Caffe at Friar Gate Studios once, but I enjoyed it so much, I thought I'd give the new one a try!
My friends and I had a coffee each, but we didn't have any food. The prices are really reasonable, it was only £2.50 for a large cappuccino. And the coffee was lovely - Just what we all needed to stop us from walking around like zombies.
The decor is really fancy. And very horny too. I did actually walk into some antlers at one point... (Aren't the cushions lovely though?)
We all really enjoyed it there, and I'm definitely tempted to go back soon to try some food! I've just found out from their website that they double up Hide Burger Bar at night, so I might well have to nip down and sample a burger!

Oversharing and overeating.
If you read last week's post, you'll know that I'm struggling to get my Masters application to a point where I'm happy with it. Turns out, ex-lecturers are pretty difficult to track down for references too!
At the rate that I'm going, I may never actually get my application finished, but on Monday, I thought I'd better start swotting up anyway. Hence all the books.
I also found the notepad I used whilst I was on work experience with the BBC last year. Most of the notes above (if you can even see them) were taken when I was answering phone calls from the public and passing them onto the relevant producers. The rest were from writing cues for presenters; which is basically writing down what they have to say. (I still can't quite believe they trusted me to do that!)
Again, whilst taking photos for my blog; on Tuesday, this guy stuck his nose under the lens to get some attention. Such a poser.
On Thursday, we treated ourselves to some lovely fish and chips from King Street Fish Bar in Belper. I can see why it's voted Chip Shop of the Year by Belper News readers. But, there are only two chip shops in Belper, so... it was always going to be 50/50, wasn't it?
Just look at them!! That is a small portion (Yes, really!) Needless to say, I couldn't eat all of it.
And on Friday, I ended up venturing out for a meal with my parents at ASK Italian in Derby (which I'll be writing about soon). I used to go there quite regularly, but haven't been for ages! We tried to take a selfie, but it kind of went wrong...
It's totally worth going just for the wonderful honeycomb cheesecake.
Are you feeling hungry now? |
Another thing... I feel the need to vent about this. Very sadly, last night, a 16 year old boy was accidentally hit by a train in my hometown. Unfortunately, some felt the need to write on Twitter about how this inconvenienced them, rather than expressing their sadness or sending condolences. This really annoyed me, because there's honestly no need to be that selfish. People like that make me feel misanthropic and disappointed in humankind.
So, seeing as some people can't be decent, I'll say this: My thoughts are with that boy's family, the train driver and the emergency services too. It's awful and terribly sad.

Ladies who lunch |
Friends. Food. Cappuccino.
Earlier this week I met up with Laura-May and Carole, a couple of friends who I went to Uni with. They came to visit me in my hometown and we went for lunch at Fresh Ground, one of my favourite local cafes.
If you're not local to Derbyshire (and let's face it, you're probably not) Belper has been gaining quite a reputation for an array of posh cafes. (Instead of back in the day, when it was aptly named Brown Town - Not because I live there... But because of an abundance of heroin addicts...)
Pictured is a tuna panini with a side of salad and crinkly crisps; and a cappuccino to drink because caffeine is my only addiction. (Not heroin.)
Not only is it fantastic value, it cost me £8.55 for my food and two drinks, but the ladies who work there are lovely too. I also had to leave a fair bit of my meal because the portions are so generous!

If you're ever in the area, I'd definitely recommend this place for a spot of lunch!

So, January had Foundation Friday. February's got Foodie Friday instead.
(I like alliteration, okay?)
This is probably the easiest cake to make ever. Seriously, if I can do it unaided, so can you.
Ingredients:
- 225g butter,
- 250g self-raising flour,
- 250g caster sugar,
- 4 eggs,
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder.
Method:
1.) Pre-heat your oven to 180C,
2.) Pour all of your ingredients into a large bowl,
3.) Mix it all together with a whisk,
4.) Pour the mixture into two (non-stick) 7 inch tins,
5.) Place them into the oven until they're golden brown (around 15-25 minutes),
6.) Take them out of the oven and place on a cooling rack.
7.) Enjoy!
8.) Feel guilty about excessive cake consumption.*

Pandas are festive, right?
Above are a selection of pictures from Christmas, if you hadn't already guessed.
(I'm now taking over-sharing to the max...)
(I'm now taking over-sharing to the max...)
Christmas Day this year consisted of: pandas, presents and a bit of turkey too. Just as an aside, I didn't get the dog drunk... I selflessly drank the wine instead to save him from any potential drunken canine capers. I couldn't finish that massive plate of Christmas dinner either, despite the fact that there's every excuse stuff your face at this time of year!
Boxing Day was full of snow! (Proper snow from the sky!) And although it looked pretty; it was a bit of a nightmare, to be honest. Seriously: People falling, cars skidding and getting stuck in town at night in the snow is not fun. But I'm home now, sat in front of the fire, so all's good.
Hope you had a lovely Christmas too!

Saturday night this week = Curry and cocktails.
It's not very often that I get to see my old school friends, so when we're all back in town, we try and pop out for a meal together. It's great to have a catch-up; even though they all hate my relentless obsession with photographing everything and everyone... Sorry 'bout that.
Firstly, we went to The Elaichi restaurant in Belper. It's an Indian restaurant (if you hadn't already guessed) and it was absolutely packed.
In a nutshell, the food was lovely. Despite being absolutely rushed off their feet, the staff at The Elaichi were really accommodating, attentive and lovely; even going as far as to hold the door open for us when we left!
(They weren't trying to get rid of us...)

After our meal at The Elaichi, we wandered a few doors down to Yardley's, which is a Cocktail and Tapas bar. We've been there a couple of times before and really enjoyed it; mainly because it's just far enough out of town not to get really busy.
A pitcher of Jessica Rabbit cost us £15, which we ended up getting about six or seven drinks out of.
I love the fact that you've got comfy leather sofas, candlelit tables and gorgeous cocktails. The atmosphere is so far removed from any raucous pub that you'd normally end up venturing into on a Saturday night out.
If you're ever in the area, you know where to go to get penguin shaped ice cream and classy cocktails.
You're welcome.
Business as usual next time, where I'll be talking about some of my favourite beauty products!
